An Urban Building Twin – What is the Munich Building Register and What Can it be Used for?

Inhalt

A building twin – such as the Munich Building Register – serves as a key data source for Urban Digital Twins and contains both basic building data and specialist building data covering the entire city, which can be used in various applications for visualisations, analyses and simulations. A key benefit lies in interoperability, which significantly simplifies cross-disciplinary data maintenance and data usage.

The Key Learnings

Building data as a basic foundation

Interoperable, comprehensive and up-to-date building data form an essential foundation for many applications of urban digital twins.

Creating added value through urban stakeholders

A twin building is a joint project involving local stakeholders. Those involved can benefit greatly from one another.

An interdisciplinary definition and classification system are essential

An interdisciplinary definition of buildings and unique, lifelong IDs are both the greatest challenges and the most important foundations for the introduction of a building twin.

Defining processes and responsibilities

Data collection should be integrated into a digital process. This avoids duplication of effort and leads to improved data quality and timeliness.

Basic source of building-related information

Using a digital twin of a building, relevant building information can be supplemented and changes in status identified, for example using remote sensing methods (e.g. new builds, renovations and demolitions).
