The Leipzig Pop-Up Platform – From Prototyping Towards Better IT Tendering

Content

Technologies such as the IoT, urban digital platforms and IaaS are essential for the development of modern cities. But which technology is best suited to which city and which use case?
As part of the Connected Urban Twins project, Leipzig was also faced with these questions. In this article, use case manager Sebastian Böhm therefore explains the concept of prototyping and introduces the specially created ‘pop-up platform’, which promises to help with problems and finding solutions on the path to digitalisation and IT implementation in cities.

The Key Learnings

Prototypes as a means of minimising risk

Prototypes can help minimise risks, clarify requirements and identify problems at an early stage.

Small steps lead to better solutions

Small-scale trials (e.g. using a sensor) and workshops help to gather knowledge and practical experience in the run-up to larger projects.

Setting up a prototyping platform

They enable organisations to test digital solutions without risk, define requirements more precisely and make more informed decisions about software or projects.

Choosing new technologies more consciously

New technologies (including open-source software) require a thorough assessment of their usability and technical maturity.

Testing open source

A prototyping platform makes it possible to evaluate software repositories for their technical suitability, identify areas requiring adaptation, and prepare them for use in line with the specific requirements of the public sector.

A culture of collaboration

Workshops and hackathons encourage collaboration between specialist departments and IT.
