Sensor Technology – Enriching 3D City Models with IoT Data

Content

Urban Digital Twins combine 3D City Models with real-time IoT data to provide an up-to-date representation of the physical environment.
This lecture presents the steps towards integrating dynamic sensor data with city models and interactive 3D web map visualization.

The Key Learnings

Visualize Dynamic Data

The CesiumJS library and the 3DTiles file format, when used in conjunction with other functionalities, provide the capability to visualize dynamic data and update it in the scene.

A Little Help From CesiumJS

The visualization workflow is based on CesiumJS, which allows other customers who use CesiumJS to integrate this workflow into their systems, make it work, and update the properties.

Standardizing Formats

The data records, e.g., for air quality or traffic light circuit data, are available in a variety of formats, including DirectX 2.0 format. It is therefore necessary to convert this data into a standardized format.

Next: The Visualization Workflow

3D City Models are integrated with IoT sensors and visualized immersively in two steps:
a) Creating a configuration file in which 3D tiles including attribute fields, dynamic fields, and their URLs are defined.
b) Defining the relationships between each dynamic property and semantic property as well as its styling parameters.
