Breaking Down Silos for Algorithms – The Urban Model Platform

Content

At the core of Urban Digital Twins will be “what if?” scenarios for various aspects of urban development. These scenarios will be supported by a range of simulation models, including: Physical models, agent-based models, system dynamics models, and machine learning/AI models. However, many of these models are currently isolated in silos, making it difficult to link them and enable widespread use.
To asolve this problem, the City Science Lab at HafenCity University Hamburg has developed a prototype for an Urban Model Platform that can serve as the backbone for all distributed models and simulations in a Digital City Twin. This prototype utilizes the open standard of the OGC API Processes, enabling the connection, addressing, and execution of (simulation) models from different authorities, companies, and research institutions via a central platform.
In the webinar, Rico Herzog will present the Urban Model Platform, its purpose, and the technical implementation.

Urban Model Plattform

Hier befindet sich das Repository für die Masterportal Addons und das OGC API Processes Backend, die für das dritte Realexperiment im CUT Projekt entwickelt werden.

The Key Learnings

Closing the Gap in the Provision and Linking of Urban Data

There are already a large number of models and algorithms for urban data that are more or less accessible in individual silos in different locations. However, there is a need for an open urban platform for providing and linking these models.

Great Promise for the Prototype of the Urban Model Platform

The prototype, based on the OGC API Processes, demonstrates the technical feasibility of an Urban Model Platform and its potential for multidimensional “What if?” scenarios.

Platform Is Used for Management and Storage

The Urban Model Platform does not perform the calculations itself; it forwards the input data to the linked model servers and saves the results. These results can then be retrieved and filtered on the server side.
